Environment
We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously. We adhere to, and often exceed, all provincial environmental standards.
Where 407 ETR crosses rivers and streams, aquatic and wildlife habitats are protected, restored and, in some cases, improved. For example, 407 ETR set up wildlife passages at various locations along the entire route so that the highway does not isolate adjoining environments.
We also integrate advanced environmental management systems into all our operations. Perhaps you noticed some of these efforts during a recent trip on the highway?
- Storm water runoff ponds — Highly advanced water management facilities to minimize the quantity of water runoff and naturally improve the water quality.
- Fenced-in corridor — Fencing along the entire corridor helps to protect animals and pedestrians by restricting access to the highway. As a result, road safety also improves.
- Unique salt-spreading machines — These advanced machines spread a salt-brine that sticks to the pavement. Unlike conventional salt-spreaders that spread salt in the form of little rocks, the salt-brine is a liquid, uses 30% less salt and can be sprayed across multiple lanes at once.
407 ETR was built in accordance with environmental standards and practices dealing with noise, erosion and sediment control. View our Environmental Policy.
