It's a fact. 407 ETR is one of the safest highways in North America.

Here are a few of the ways we protect you and your family:
- Highway 407 is constructed to the highest design standards.
- Road Patrol is on duty 24/7 and extra Patrol staff is scheduled on weekdays to provide extra coverage during periods of peak traffic when practical to do so. View our "Road Patrol" video (Quicktime or Windows Media format).
- New pavement surfaces (free from potholes).
- Damaged pavement and shoulder surfaces are quickly repaired.
- Pavement markings are maintained to the highest level. All markings are re-applied annually using special, high-quality paint with reflectorized beads.
- 407 ETR provides excellent night-time visibility. The lighting system is maintained to the highest level to ensure on-going high performance and minimum outages.
- All roadside hazards are protected by the very latest safety systems. Any damaged facilities are repaired or replaced within 24 hours of an incident.
- All our highway signs use the highest quality, reflectorized materials. Any damaged or deteriorated signs are quickly repaired or replaced.
- The entire Highway 407 system, including all ramps, are routinely patrolled by Highway Operational staff. Our Road Patrol staff are continually removing any debris from the roadway and shoulders.
- Our Highway Operations Control Centre monitors and records activities on the highway, 24-hrs a day.
- 24-hr winter road patrol.
- All planned highway maintenance activities are done during off-peak traffic periods, especially nighttime, so that you don't get unnecessarily slowed down.
- Closed-circuit television cameras along the highway enable us to detect incidents faster.
Winter safety
Even in the middle of a snowstorm, it's easy to see why 407 ETR is one of the safest highways in North America.

Here's a detailed listing of how we keep you safe during the winter months:
- 407 ETR’s annual winter maintenance budget is over $5 million.
- 24-hour winter Road Patrol — including extra staff on duty on weekdays, from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. , to provide extra coverage and help with highway operations and emergency services.
- 24-hour response call for equipment — our snowplow drivers actually live at 407 ETR Patrol Yards during the winter so they're ready to go within minutes.
- Detailed weather forecasting data — we're constantly monitoring information from Environment Canada and the Weather Network to anticipate road conditions. In addition, we operate four road weather information sites (Dundas St., Derry Road, Yonge Street and York/Durham Line) with online access. Our Highway Operations Control Centre is continuously monitoring weather data, including radar images; road and surface temperatures; as well as moisture and chemical (salt) conditions.
- Ongoing monitoring of surfaces — we constantly check all road surfaces and shoulders before, during and after storms, and taking any necessary action as quickly as possible.
- Winter fleet consists of over 60 trucks to plow snow, spread salt, spray salt brine and so forth.
- Computerized Road Patrol weather monitoring — our Road Patrol trucks are now equipped with computer displays of these online weather outputs, including current Environment Canada weather sites.
- As part of our caring for the environment efforts, we have adopted a salt management plan to reduce the amount of salt used during winter storms.
- The latest equipment — 407 ETR is investing in new hi-tech spreader equipment that will increase the performance/effectiveness of salt using anti-icing and pre-wetting processes.
- GPS computerized monitoring — all 407 ETR vehicles and new spreader trucks are equipped with GPS monitoring to view actual on-road activities such as salting and plowing. The system is web-based so all supervisors can monitor vehicle operations online from any computer.
- Automated GPS salt applications — equipment spreads salt where and when required.
